CHAPTER SEVEN

HE SHOULD have followed her. He didn’t like loose ends, or loose cannons, but the ambassador was one of his guests tonight, which left him staring over the side of the yacht at a small red inflatable captained by a girl whose determined profile told him that at least she had recovered, and for that he was relieved.

Not only had she recovered, but Ellie had also fulfilled all her duties to Luigi before leaving the yacht, and she had done that with a composure that had astounded him. After the way she had fled he had imagined she would run straight off the boat. Far from it. She had reported for duty, and then acted out the part of waitress as if she couldn’t hear the gossip surrounding her. She had been one of the last to leave and had waited until Luigi had given her permission to go.

He’d watched her as she moved about his guests, discreetly serving them and remaining calm when they were rude to her, as people so often were to staff when they’d had a drink. He’d barely been able to focus on what the ambassador was saying to him while his thoughts were awash with Ellie, and his desire to defend her. The look she’d given him had been enough to change his mind about that.

He pushed back from the rail at last. He had to be sure she was safe before he could turn away. She had some hold on the local people’s hearts he couldn’t understand. She was only half Greek, for instance, and this was a very conservative island. Her English mother had run back to the safety of her middle-class roots, deserting her Greek fisherman. Surely that was enough to turn the people against Ellie? But plainly not. If the mother had found the gulf between fantasy and reality too great it was clear the daughter must have been drawn by the ocean; it could do that. The elders of the island, having watched and assessed Ellie in their quiet and shrewd way, had come to accept her as one of their own. Even so, he couldn’t allow her to stand in his way, or turn his people against him.

Before leaving the deck he called to one of his men. ‘Be sure to lay illuminated marker buoys around that fishing boat…’ He pointed out Ellie’s boat. He couldn’t risk an accident in the dark. ‘And then make sure that my Fairline’s fuelled and ready for the morning…’

The man saluted him and then went silently about his business. Ellie might have run away from him, and then acted out a part for the rest of the evening, but he had no intention of leaving things here.
